Young People & Recreational Drugs
This month our topic is: why are our young adults using recreational drugs and what are their effects? In particular, it seems that drug use is becoming increasingly common sometimes resulting in aggression and lack of motivation. In this newsletter we will touch on some of the varied reasons as to why they are using it.
Why do our young people turn to recreational drugs?
It is commonly thought that young people turn to recreational drugs due to feelings of depression or unhappiness, but this is not always so. Adolescence is a time for trying new things. They (young people) use recreational drugs for many reasons, including curiosity and experimentation, availability and acceptability of the drug, to reduce stress, to feel grown up or to fit in and just for the purpose of pure rebellion.
What are some of the telltale signs young people may be using recreational drugs?
It is every parent's nightmare to find out that their child is using recreational drugs, but if you aren't experienced in noticing the telltale signs, how would you know? These are some common signs to look for:
- A drop in school performance
- A reduction in organised extra-curricular activities (sport, etc)
- An unexplained change in friends
- Reduced interaction with family
- Money or valuable items go missing
- Unusual or irregular behaviour
- Mood swings

Although it's important to remember that coming into adulthood is a time of major change. Young people may exhibit some of these signs due to the fact of simply growing up! If you suspect your child is experimenting with recreational drugs, it's important to talk to them and remember, don't accuse or place blame. It is important to help and support them.
What are some of the effects of these recreational drugs on our young people?
For the effects of the various recreational drugs on our young people, please see the table at:
