Welcome to the first CCS newsletter for 2005. We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday. Unfortunately this New Year hasn’t been all fireworks and celebrations what with the Tsunami in South East Asia, the bush fires in South Australia, the mudslide in California and the floods in the US and UK it has certainly been a year for natural disasters and we’re still only halfway through January!
But what can I do?
It is common to feel impotent and overwhelmed when bombarded with so much that needs to be changed- what difference can one person really make? The point is to do something, for even small changes make a difference. A similar feeling is experienced by many people who make New Year resolutions, only to find year after year that they weren’t able to stick to them. These people often make the mistake of trying to implement too many dramatic changes at once and in so doing, fail to make any change at all.
Is what I want really important?
Reflecting on the past year and recognising areas of your life that you would like to improve or in which you are dissatisfied is a great way to gain a better understanding of yourself and what your priorities are.
Before you make your New Year resolutions this year, think about why you’re making them. Are you trying to change for you or are you really seeking approval from someone else? The only resolutions you should be making are those that are important to you because they are the ones that are ultimately going to bring you closer to your goals and your ideals.
You may find it helpful to look at “The Satisfaction with Life Scale” by psychologist Ed Diener who specialises in happiness research. You can read more about Diener and his scale here: http://www.tbims.org/combi/swls/swlsrat.html
Don’t give someone else the reins
Remember that you will not find happiness in your life if you are not content within your own skin. It is always important to consider how your choices and decisions affect other people but there is a difference between considering other people and being controlled by them. Don’t live your life according to someone else. It takes courage to make your own choices and stand by them but the alternative leads to you living a life not of your own making, which would be very sad indeed!
