Welcome to the September edition of the CCS eNewsletter.
Life is amazing isn’t it? One day it can all be going perfectly according to plan and the next day you wake up only to discover that your world is crashing in around you. Not only does life regularly throw us curveballs but for some reason it’s as though life waits until it’s got a full bucket of balls and then throws all the curveballs at once! When this happens, it is common to feel overwhelmed and uncomfortable but with a slight attitude adjustment and a little bit of faith it is possible to not only get through the difficult times but to emerge refreshed and stronger than ever. It’s all well and good to plan for our future, decide on our goals and work hard to achieve them but there is always an element of uncertainty. The important thing is to be flexible and open to new ideas and directions.
Find the opportunity in the challenges
You’ve probably heard the saying, “when one door closes another opens”. Are you one of those people that continue to kick and rail against the closed door, too busy fighting to look over your shoulder and notice the open door waiting silently behind you? There’s no harm in testing the closed door a little- just to make sure it really is closed and locked before you look for another opening but there comes a time when you must choose to stop pouring your energy in a direction that is not open to you and focus it somewhere else instead.
Accept the things you cannot change
The problem is that when people remain inflexible and stubbornly refuse to stop railing against a closed door they tend to become bitter and weary. Eventually, they cease to focus on their ultimate goal and see only the closed door in front of them. There are often many different paths which lead to your ultimate goals and just because you find one path is closed to you, it does not necessarily mean that your goal is unattainable.
Have faith
When everything starts to go wrong it is easy to believe that the world or God is against you. This immediately puts you in a negative frame of mind and you are more likely to interpret and react to events or communications in a negative light. It can be very difficult sometimes but try to look for the positive things in every situation. Find the lessons to be learned, the exciting new paths to be explored and trust that even if the situation you’re in right now feels awful, it won’t always feel that way and you will be a better person for having experienced it. It helps to surround yourself with support during the difficult times. Talk to your counsellor and your friends. Sometimes they are able to provide a perspective you haven’t considered.
Remember that life is what you make it. If you expect your day to be filled with wonderful opportunities and exciting events it’s very likely that it will be but if you find those curveballs coming hard and fast don’t panic; look around you for all the new doors that are beginning to open.
