Understanding your Myers Briggs Type Indicator

Welcome to the March 2006 edition of Clayfield Counselling Services’ e-newsletter. We’ve recently had a lot of clients ask us about the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and how it can benefit them. So this month we’ve decided to take a closer look at MBTI; what it is, how it works and why you might find it useful.

What is MBTI?

Isabel Briggs Myers writes, “The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a questionnaire designed to make Jung’s theory of psychological types understandable and useful in everyday life. MBTI results identify valuable differences between normal, healthy people, differences that can be the source of much misunderstanding and miscommunication.” 1999, p 5.

The 16 types

The sixteen types are made up of the following preferences:

Each type is defined by a combination of four of these preferences.

So how does it work?

When you contact Clayfield Counselling Services to arrange your MBTI assessment we’ll make an appointment time for you to come in for an hour to complete an MBTI questionnaire. To complete the questionnaire, you’ll need to engage both your thinking and feeling sides. Once you’ve answered all the multiple choice questions, your job is done and you can go home. The rest is up to us. Your answers are categorised and a report is typed up just for you which, depending on the type of report you’ve requested, may include a range of information ranging from how your personality type interacts with others, to which careers you might be most suited to. When your report is ready, you’ll attend another appointment and the counsellor will go through your report with you and answer any questions you may have.

Is MBTI for me?

MBTI can be a useful tool for many people;

Employers: Employers can utilise the MBTI to assist them in choosing the right employee for not only the job but to suit the team they’ll be working with. Having an understanding of your employee’s personality type will ultimately help you get the best out of your staff.

School leavers and Job seekers: When you complete an MBTI assessment with Clayfield Counselling Services you will receive an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses both in an interview and on the job. You’ll also have a better idea of the type of work environment you’ll thrive in and the careers that your type is most often attracted to.

MBTI is also a great way to gain a better insight into how you relate to and interact with people socially. Knowing your type and the type of the people you love, especially those of you in marital and family relationships, can help you communicate in a more effective and harmonious manner. Those crazy things other people do might even start to make sense to you!

If you’re interested in completing an MBTI assessment with us, why not phone us to arrange an appointment? The cost of the appointment is $95 for the session which includes completing the questionnaire and $120 or $150 respectively for the MBTI or MBTI and Careers report.
